Brivo is a cloud-native access control platform. Door controllers (Brivo ACS6000, ACS300, etc.) connect to the Brivo cloud over an outbound HTTPS connection — no inbound ports, no VPN required. Credential management, door schedules, access events, and audit logs are stored in the Brivo cloud. Operators use the Brivo web app or mobile app to manage access from any device with a browser.
The architectural advantage is zero server maintenance: Brivo runs in the cloud, you manage doors from a browser, and the system scales without IT involvement. The architectural cost is cloud dependency: if Brivo's cloud has an outage, your access control is offline until it recovers. (Brivo's cloud uptime has been strong — but cloud-dependent is cloud-dependent.)
Verdict: Choose Synergis if you have an existing Genetec Security Center deployment, want unified video + access in one operator interface, and have the IT staff to maintain a server estate. Choose Brivo if you want zero server maintenance, browser-based management from any device, and a focused access control platform that integrates with the camera system of your choice.
Both platforms support the modern credential mix: cards, fobs, mobile credentials (Bluetooth and NFC), PINs, and biometric readers. The implementation differs in important ways.
Genetec Synergis supports the full credential mix but mobile credentials require a separate Genetec Mobile Credential app and per-license enrollment. The mobile experience is functional but not best-in-class.
Brivo was an early mover on mobile credentials. Brivo Onair Mobile Pass is included with most Brivo plans and is widely recognized as one of the best mobile credential experiences in the industry. Visitors can be issued mobile credentials without an app download in some configurations.
