Genetec vs Avigilon: VMS, Alta, and the Migration Path for 2026

Genetec Security Center and Avigilon (now part of Motorola Solutions) take fundamentally different approaches to physical security. Genetec is a unified, hardware-agnostic software platform. Avigilon runs the gamut from the on-premises Control Center VMS — best for Avigilon camera estates — to Alta, its newer cloud-native Unified Security platform. Here is how to choose.

If you are evaluating Genetec Security Center against Avigilon for a new deployment or a multi-site refresh, you are choosing between two different platform models. Genetec Security Center is a unified software platform that runs on servers and integrates with hundreds of third-party camera and access control brands. Avigilon — now part of Motorola Solutions — splits the difference: Control Center is the on-premises VMS for Avigilon cameras; Alta is the cloud-native Unified Security platform that competes head-on with Verkada.

Architecture: Unified Software Platform vs Cloud-Native Alta

Genetec Security Center

Genetec Security Center is a unified security platform with deep adoption in the enterprise and high-security end of the market. It runs on Windows servers on-premises, in a private cloud, or in a hybrid configuration. The software is hardware-agnostic: it integrates with cameras from Axis, Hanwha, Bosch, Avigilon, Pelco, and many other manufacturers, plus third-party access control and intrusion systems.

Genetec ClearID, AutoVu (license plate recognition), and Omnicast (video) are modules you license and deploy on the same server estate. Cloud features (Genetec Clearance, Stratocast, Security Center SaaS) exist, but the system's center of gravity is the on-premises server. Updates, failover, and storage are operator-managed.

Avigilon Control Center and Avigilon Alta

Avigilon — acquired by Motorola Solutions in 2018 — ships two distinct platform products. Avigilon Control Center (ACC) is the on-premises VMS, optimized for Avigilon's own cameras; it supports many third-party ONVIF cameras but is strongest with Avigilon hardware. Avigilon Alta (formerly Ava, acquired by Avigilon in 2021) is the cloud-native Unified Security platform: cameras, access control, and video managed from a browser, with no server to maintain.

The trade-off is platform fragmentation. ACC and Alta are converging but they are still different products, and an organization that needs both on-premises and cloud-native behavior typically has to choose one as the primary system.

Verdict: Choose Genetec if you need hardware flexibility or have an existing mixed-vendor camera estate to preserve. Choose Avigilon (ACC + Alta) if you have an existing Avigilon camera estate or want a single-vendor end-to-end solution in both on-premises and cloud-native form factors.

AI and Video Analytics

Genetec AI

Genetec's AI capabilities are delivered through KiwiVision, the company's analytics module, and through integration with third-party analytics partners. Object classification (person, vehicle), license plate recognition (AutoVu), people counting, and crowd-density monitoring are available. Facial recognition is offered as a separate, opt-in module with a strong consent and bias-testing framework — important for organizations with regulatory concerns.

Forensic search is strong: operators can search by time, camera, or event type across an enterprise deployment. The trade-off is that some of the most useful AI features (occupancy trends, natural-language video search, unusual-activity detection) require additional licensing and configuration that Avigilon Alta and Verkada ship out of the box.

Avigilon AI

On the on-premises side, Avigilon Control Center includes Avigilon Appearance Search, self-learning video analytics (unusual motion, unusual activity), and Focus of Attention — a heatmap-style operator console that highlights the cameras with the most activity across a site. License plate recognition is supported through Avigilon's H4 LPC camera line. Avigilon Alta layers cloud AI on top: object detection, attribute search, occupancy analytics, and natural-language search are standard.

The practical difference is in the operator experience: Alta's cloud AI is more accessible to non-technical users, while Genetec's KiwiVision gives a more configurable toolkit at the cost of more setup time.

Verdict: Genetec's AI is more configurable and more conservative on privacy. Avigilon Alta ships a more polished, cloud-native AI experience out of the box; ACC's analytics are strongest when paired with Avigilon cameras. The everyday operator experience favors Alta.

Total Cost of Ownership

Genetec pricing model

Genetec licensing is module-based: you pay for Security Center, plus per-camera channel licenses, plus any analytics modules (KiwiVision, AutoVu) and any cloud features. There is also the server hardware, virtualization, storage, and operator time to deploy, patch, and maintain it. For a 50-camera, multi-site deployment, hardware and server costs are typically a meaningful share of the total 5-year cost.

The honest read: Genetec's TCO is competitive when you already have the server estate and IT staff in-house. It runs higher when you are paying an integrator to manage the platform for you.

Avigilon pricing model

Avigilon Control Center is sold as a perpetual software license (per camera channel, per server) with annual support. Avigilon Alta is sold as a per-device, per-year cloud subscription that bundles the cloud, AI, and firmware updates. ACC's perpetual-license model can be attractive for organizations that prefer capex over opex and have the IT staff to manage an on-premises deployment.

For an ACC-vs-Alta comparison, Alta typically lands at a comparable or slightly higher total 5-year cost once camera hardware, cloud subscription, and migration effort are factored in. Compared with Genetec on a like-for-like deployment, Avigilon is usually at parity or higher once the bundled cloud and AI are priced in.

Verdict: If you have an existing IT/security operations team, prefer capex, and want to preserve a mixed-vendor camera estate, Genetec's TCO is competitive. If you have an existing Avigilon camera estate and want to consolidate on Alta cloud, the TCO is usually lower than re-licensing everything through a different vendor.

Ecosystem and Integration

Genetec's open architecture is its deepest competitive moat. Security Center integrates with hundreds of third-party systems: access control (Lenel, Software House, Honeywell), intrusion (DSC, Honeywell, Bosch), intercoms (Zenitel, Commend), perimeter detection, fire alarm, building management, and more. For campus-style deployments, government facilities, and high-security environments with strict integration requirements, Genetec is the de facto standard.

Avigilon's ecosystem is narrower but tighter. ACC and Alta both integrate with the broader Motorola Solutions public-safety portfolio (CommandCentral, Ally, Vigilant), and Alta's open APIs connect to many modern access control and building management platforms. The integration with the most common platforms is solid but not as deep as Genetec's open partner ecosystem.

Verdict: If integration breadth with non-Avigilon systems is the priority, Genetec wins. If you want a single-vendor platform inside the Motorola Solutions public-safety umbrella, Avigilon wins on operator experience and product cohesion.

Migration: Switching From Genetec to Avigilon

For organizations already running Genetec who are considering a move to Avigilon, the path depends on which Avigilon product you are migrating to. A typical migration looks like this:

  1. Survey the existing camera estate. Avigilon Alta accepts third-party ONVIF cameras for basic viewing, but the system is strongest with Avigilon hardware. Decide which cameras will be replaced.
  2. Plan the network and storage. Alta is cloud-native and bandwidth-light for live view, but bulk video retrieval and local recording still depend on your uplink and switch port density.
  3. Choose ACC or Alta. If on-premises is the requirement, ACC is the right destination. If cloud-native is the requirement, Alta is. Mixed estates typically need one as the primary system.
  4. Decommission the Genetec server estate over a phased schedule that does not leave gaps in coverage, and re-train operators on the new interface.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Genetec if: you need to preserve a mixed-vendor camera estate; you have strict on-premises or data-residency requirements; you need deep integration with non-camera systems (fire, BMS, intrusion, intercom) that no single-vendor platform can match; or you are deploying for a high-security environment where Genetec's compliance certifications matter.

Choose Avigilon Control Center (ACC) if: you have an existing Avigilon camera estate, prefer an on-premises VMS, want a perpetual-license capex model, and need deep integration with the broader Motorola Solutions public-safety portfolio.

Choose Avigilon Alta if: you have an existing Avigilon camera estate, want cloud-native management with no server to maintain, and your network can support a cloud-managed deployment model.
